The occupational therapist focuses on the evaluation and improvement of physical, cognitive, and perceptual skills that affect the patient’s ability to perform functional tasks, often referred to as activities of daily living (ADLs).
ADLs include self-care skills such as:
- Dressing
- Grooming
- Bathing
- Toileting
- Self-feeding
Independent living skills such as:
- Money management
- Preparing a meal
- Medication management
Community living skills, such as the use of public transportation, are also addressed.
The occupational therapist also assesses the patient’s need for adaptive equipment (e.g. tub chair, raised toilet seat, reacher, sock aide, etc.) as needed.
The unit offers a fully equipped and stocked ADL apartment to best recreate the home experience. The ADL apartment includes a full kitchen, bed, and bathroom allowing the patient to experience therapy in a simulated home environment.
Additionally, technologies such as the Nintendo Wii are often incorporated to work on balance, cognition, and reaction times.
